Fake QR Codes Found on Parking Payment Machines

Phishbowl Admin Avatar

Authorities in the UK are warning drivers about fake QR code stickers being placed on parking payment machines. The scam, known as “quishing”, redirects users to fraudulent payment websites designed to steal banking and card details.

Several councils confirmed that scammers had placed fake QR stickers over legitimate parking instructions in public car parks.

How the Scam Works

When users scan the fake QR code, they are taken to a website controlled by scammers. The site often mimics legitimate parking payment portals and asks victims to enter payment or banking information.

Warning Signs

  • QR code appears as a sticker placed over another label
  • Website URL looks suspicious or unfamiliar
  • Parking payment unexpectedly asks for excessive personal information
  • Council or parking operator normally does not use QR codes
  • QR asks you to download another app to make payment

How to Stay Safe

Avoid scanning QR codes on parking machines unless you are certain they are legitimate. If unsure, search for the official parking app or website manually instead of using the QR code. You can also download the Phishbowl App and use the QR code scanner for free to check what’s behind the QR Code.
